Notwithstanding the rapid economic development, corruption is one of the key problems for countries as large and inhomogeneous as the Russian Federation. President Medvedev recently made it clear that corruption in Russia has reached a level that threatens the country’s national interests.

Transparency International, or TI for short, is a global non-governmental organisation engaged in national and international popular and corporate anti-corruption efforts. Our speaker, Elena Panfilova, graduated from the History Faculty of Moscow’s Lomonosov University and the Diplomatic Academy of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 2000, she founded the National TI Office for Russia based in Moscow, which she still heads today. In her lecture, she will explain aspects of corruption in Russia’s social, economic and political life and draw international comparisons. An effective and sustainable fight against and containment of corruption is only possible if the state, business and civil society work together and form coalitions.
